چکیده

10 Sex specific pheromones are known to play an important role in butterfly courtship, and may 11 influence both individual reproductive success and reproductive isolation between species. 12 Extensive ecological, behavioural and genetic studies of Heliconius butterflies have made a 13 substantial contribution to our understanding of speciation. However, although long suspected 14 to play an important role, chemical signals have received relatively little attention in this 15 genus. Here, we combine morphological, chemical and behavioural analyses of a male 16 pheromone in the neotropical butterfly Heliconius melpomene. First we identify specialized 17 brush-like scales that are putative androconia, and lie within the shiny grey region found on 18 the hindwing of males. We then describe six putative male sex pheromone compounds, which 19 are largely confined to the androconial region of the hindwing of mature males, but not 20 immature males or females. Finally, behavioural assays reveal subtle, but detectable, 21 differences in female response to models scented with hindwing androconial extracts of 22 mature conspecific males as compared to unscented controls. Collectively, the results describe 23 structures involved in release of the pheromone and a list of potential male sex pheromone 24 compounds triggering a behavioural response in females. 27 28 29. Male sex pheromone components in Heliconius butterflies released by the androconia affect female choice

Sex-specific pheromones are known to play an important role in butterfly courtship, and may influence both individual reproductive success and reproductive isolation between species. Male pheromones, although long suspected to play an important...

Sex-specific chemical cues from immatures facilitate the evolution of mate guarding in Heliconius butterflies.

Competition for mates has substantial effects on sensory systems and often leads to the evolution of extraordinary mating behaviours in nature. The ability of males to find sexually immature females and associate with them until mating is a remarkable example. Although several aspects of such pre-copulatory mate guarding have been investigated, little is known about the mechanisms used by males...

The Male Sex Pheromone of the Butterfly Bicyclus anynana: Towards an Evolutionary Analysis

BACKGROUND Female sex pheromones attracting mating partners over long distances are a major determinant of reproductive isolation and speciation in Lepidoptera. Males can also produce sex pheromones but their study, particularly in butterflies, has received little attention. A detailed comparison of sex pheromones in male butterflies with those of female moths would reveal patterns of conservat...

Moths Behaving like Butterflies. Evolutionary Loss of Long Range Attractant Pheromones in Castniid Moths: A Paysandisia archon Model

BACKGROUND In the course of evolution butterflies and moths developed two different reproductive behaviors. Whereas butterflies rely on visual stimuli for mate location, moths use the 'female calling plus male seduction' system, in which females release long-range sex pheromones to attract conspecific males. There are few exceptions from this pattern but in all cases known female moths possess ...

Selection on male sex pheromone composition contributes to butterfly reproductive isolation.

Selection can facilitate diversification by inducing character displacement in mate choice traits that reduce the probability of maladaptive mating between lineages. Although reproductive character displacement (RCD) has been demonstrated in two-taxa case studies, the frequency of this process in nature is still debated. Moreover, studies have focused primarily on visual and acoustic traits, de...
